A bit about me
I studied Graphic Design BA and Communication Design MA at Northumbria, leaning hard into typography and editorial work, then UX/UI. I liked the kind of design where the details carry the meaning.
After graduating I worked as a designer at StepOne, on paid and social-first marketing material alongside logo and brand work for limited edition product lines. The work had to do more than look right. It had to move numbers, and it did, lifting conversions on the products it supported. That's stuck with me since: design judged by whether it works, not just whether it's nice to look at.
Freelancing across all kinds of clients taught me the rest. How to get to the heart of what a business needs quickly, work to a real deadline, and build something clear around it.
Today I work independently, building websites for independent businesses across the world. The kind where the brand matters and the details still earn their keep.

My vision
Independent businesses deserve the same design sensibilities as major corporations. Design that carries the same care as the work it represents, built to last rather than rebuilt every couple of years chasing whatever's trending.
That's the practice I'm building: direct and honest about what a project actually needs — nothing more, nothing sold that doesn't earn its place.

The fun stuff

Designers do sometimes have a life away from their laptop, and I'm lucky to be one of them. Good food, TV and film, and music take up the largest portion of my life away from the confines of my horribly uncomfortable desk chair. (Wow, that's so boring. I'm writing this and realising I'm describing every single person on earth: Hey, I'm Tom and I like water and oxygen.)
Maybe it's easier to just link you to my Instagram, @t.raww_, and at some point I'll put a playlist on here to prove I have a personality and I'm not just residing in the liminal space.
Realistically I'll never do that, as 100% of my time will be going into fussing about the H1 kerning instead.
